In 1984, when New Zealand hosted the 16th pageant in Christchurch, countries from Central and South America, including the USA and Canada participated.

It’s been 10 long years for the Filipinos…waiting to have new
Miss Universe coming from the Philippines

Miriam Quiambao
1st Runner Up
Miss Universe 1999
May 26, 2009, could’ve been a date of celebration for Filipino pageant fans, after all, exactly 10 years ago when Miriam Quiambao, 24-year-old licensed physical therapist and gym instructor, nearly captured the third Miss Universe crown for her country Philippines, being named 1st runner-up, only behind a shocked Miss Botswana. However, a decade later, no other Miss Philippines has been able to land into the semi or quarter-finals of Miss Universe (top 10, 15 or 20!). Ironically, as this pageant-crazy nation failed year after year in Miss Universe throughout the first decade of the new millenium, the Philippines did quite well in the other 4 Grand Slam pageants, with several Miss World finalists (in the years when popular voting was decisive), and victories in Miss International, Tourism Queen and Earth. Will the Philippines Miss Universe drought end in the Bahamas?? The answer is coming up in August…

MISS SCOTLAND 2009

STUNNING Katharine Brown is the pride of the nation — after being crowned Miss Scotland 2009 last night. Gorgeous Katharine beat nine other finalists to land the glittering crown and title at Glasgow’s Clyde Auditorium. It was a night to remember as the 2,000-strong crowd clapped and cheered for their favourites. The thrilled 22-year-old, of Dunblane, Perthshire, screamed “Oh my God”, as she was declared winner. She then mouthed: “Thank you, thank you, thank you.”

Hunky Duncan James, from boyband Blue, hosted the bash. He added: “I said Miss Scotland would have to be supergirl and I reckon we’ve just found her. All the girls were stunning but the winner just stood out for the judges.” Runner-up was Jamey Bowers, 19, of Edinburgh, with Diane Mathieson, also 19, of Saltcoats, Ayrshire, third. It was a night of tension, excitement, glamour and tears of joy. From thousands of entries during our three-month search, only ten girls made it to the final. And ALL of them put their heart and soul into making the evening perfect. It was a difficult task for the judges — Scottish Sun Editor David Dinsmore, Ultimo boss Michelle Mone, Radio Clyde presenter Suzie McGuire, River City hunk Chris Brazier and last year’s Miss Scotland Stephanie. Mr Dinsmore said: “Every single one of our finalists was a winner. They should all be extremely proud of themselves.”

Sandra Inez Seifert Wins Miss Philippines Earth 2009: A Sweet Revenge
Sandra Inez Seifert wins the right to represent her country, the Philippines, at the 9th edition of Miss Earth, the third biggest beauty pageant in the world, sometime in October this year in Manila.
Seifert was crowned last Sunday night. May 10, as Miss Philippines-Earth 2009 in the Arena Entertainment and Recreational Center of the People in San Juan City and aired over ABS-CBN Channel 2. She represented the province of Negros Occidental.
The beauty queen, 24-year old Filipino-German nurse, bested more than 40 candidates.
This is definitely a big victory for Sandra after she was disqualified last month from the rival beauty pageant that selects Philippines' representatives to Misses Universe, International and World.
Just two days before the coronation night of Binibining Pilipinas 2009 (Miss Philippines 2009), Sandra was disqualified after she was discovered to have posed for a men's magazine. In fact, her pictures that appeared in Maxim (Philippine edition) are not scandalous. She was just wearing what beauty contestants definitely wear during swimsuit competitions. The pictures were just made controversial by the hypocrites of the Binibining Pilipinas.
Indeed, this victory is a sweet revenge for Sandra who is now aiming the title of Miss Earth 2009. Another Filipina beauty queen, Karla Paula Henry, is the current titleholder.

Going back to the result of the pageant, aside from Seifert, Grezilda Adelantar was named Miss Phillipines Eco Tourism; Miss Philippines Fire is Patricia Marie Tumulak from Quezon City; Miss Philippines Air is Michelle Martha Braun of Aklan and Miss Philippines Water is Catherin Loyola of Sydney, Australia.
Miss Philippines Earth is now claimed by many beauty fans as the biggest beauty pageant in the Philippines drawing around 40 candidates every year.
The semi-finalists who made to Top 10 are Alexis Go of Manila, Tessa Kruger of the Filipino community in Canada, Monique Teruelle Manuel of Bataan, Vanessa Johnson of Pampanga (She is also a semi-finalist of Binibining Pilipinas 2009) and Kirstie Joan Babor of Alegria.
